32 Amp Outlet Installation: What You Need to Know

A standard power point in an Australian home is rated at 10 amps. That's fine for kettles and TVs, but some equipment needs much more. That's where a 32 amp outlet comes in.

Here's what a 32 amp outlet is for, what's involved in installing one, and what affects the job, from a licensed Gold Coast electrician.

What is a 32 amp outlet used for?

Common reasons Gold Coast customers ask us for a 32 amp outlet:

  • Portable EV chargers that plug in rather than hardwire.

  • Welders, compressors and workshop machinery in sheds and garages.

  • Pool and spa heat pumps with high power draw.

  • Kilns, commercial kitchen gear and large pumps.

  • Generator or temporary power connections on worksites and rural properties.

A 32 amp outlet uses a larger plug that won't fit a normal power point. That's deliberate: it stops high-draw equipment being plugged into a circuit that can't handle it.

Single phase or three phase?

32 amp outlets come in two main types:

  • Single phase (3 round pins): portable EV chargers, heat pumps and smaller welders.

  • Three phase (5 round pins): larger workshop machinery, big compressors and faster EV charging.

Most Gold Coast homes are single phase. Many newer homes, rural properties and commercial sites have three phase power. Check the equipment's plug and manual before booking, or send us a photo and we'll tell you which one you need.

What's involved in the installation?

A 32 amp outlet isn't just a bigger power point. It needs:

  1. Its own dedicated circuit from the switchboard.

  2. Heavier cable, sized to the load and the distance from the switchboard.

  3. A suitably rated circuit breaker and safety switch (RCD) protection.

  4. A weatherproof outlet if it's outdoors, in a carport or in a wash-down area.

  5. Testing and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance when the job is done.

What affects the cost and the job?

The biggest factors are:

  • Distance from the switchboard. A long run to a back shed needs heavier cable and more labour than an outlet in the garage next to the board.

  • Switchboard space and capacity. If your board is full or outdated, it may need work first.

  • Your total electrical load. Adding a big new load to a house that already runs air con, a pool and an oven may need a load assessment so the main supply isn't overloaded.

  • Cable route. Underground trenching to a detached shed is more involved than running cable through a roof space.

Can I use an extension lead or adaptor instead?

No. Adapting a 32 amp plug to a 10 or 15 amp power point overloads the circuit and is a genuine fire risk. If your equipment came with a 32 amp plug, it needs a 32 amp outlet on a suitable circuit.

EV owners: outlet or wall charger?

A 32 amp outlet with a portable charger works well for many EV owners. A hardwired wall charger offers smart scheduling, solar charging and a tidier install. We install both, and we'll help you choose based on how far you drive and whether you have solar.
