Signs your switchboard needs upgrading
Ceramic (rewireable) fuses instead of circuit breakers
No safety switches (RCDs), or only one protecting the power circuits
Your safety switch keeps tripping or breakers trip under normal load
A burning smell, scorch marks, buzzing or a board that feels warm
No spare room for new circuits for air conditioning, an induction cooktop, an EV charger, solar or a battery
An old black backing board. Some older switchboards have asbestos-containing backing, which must be handled correctly when the board is replaced
Selling, renovating or adding a granny flat, and you've been told the board isn't up to current standards
Switchboard upgrades for solar and batteries
Adding solar panels or a home battery is one of the most common reasons for a switchboard upgrade. The solar inverter and battery need their own circuit breakers, isolators and safety switches, and many older Gold Coast switchboards simply don't have the room or the right protection. A solar switchboard upgrade gives your system a proper, compliant connection and room to add a battery or EV charger later. If you're getting quotes for solar or a battery, ask us to check the switchboard first so there are no surprises on installation day. See our solar and battery page.
Switchboard installation and replacement
For new builds, extensions, granny flats and sheds, we install new main switchboards and sub-boards sized for what the building needs now and later. For older homes, a full switchboard replacement swaps out old fuses and outdated components for modern circuit breakers, RCD safety switches on every final circuit, and properly labelled circuits so you know exactly what each breaker controls. See switchboard installation for more.
Safety switches (RCDs)
Safety switches cut the power in a fraction of a second if current is leaking to earth, for example through a person. They're one of the most important safety devices in any home. Current standards require RCD protection on power and lighting circuits in new work, and many older Gold Coast homes are missing them. We can add safety switch protection as part of a switchboard upgrade or on its own where the board allows.
Surge protection
South East Queensland gets frequent summer storms. A surge protection device in your switchboard helps protect TVs, computers, air conditioners and appliances from voltage spikes. It's a small add-on that's easy to fit during a switchboard upgrade.
Switchboard repairs and emergencies
If your switchboard is sparking, smoking, smells like burning or has lost power to part of the house, turn off the main switch if it's safe to do so and call us on 0411 292 602. We offer 24/7 emergency callouts for switchboard faults. If there's smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.
Commercial switchboard upgrades
Shops, offices and warehouses outgrow their switchboards as equipment is added. We upgrade commercial switchboards, add three-phase circuits and sub-boards, and can schedule the changeover out of trading hours.
What happens during a switchboard upgrade
Inspection and quote. We check your existing board, wiring and earthing and give you a clear, fixed quote.
Booking. Most home upgrades are done in a day. The power is off for part of that time, and we'll tell you how long upfront.
Installation. New enclosure, circuit breakers, RCD safety switches and surge protection if selected, with every circuit labelled.
Testing and certification. Everything is tested before the power goes back on, and you receive a certificate of compliance.

Switchboard upgrade for solar
Adding solar panels or a battery often means your switchboard needs work first. Switchboards for solar power need space for the solar main switch, correct labelling and modern circuit breakers and safety switches, and many older boards simply do not have room. As a licensed switchboard electrician, we can upgrade your board before or after your solar install so it passes inspection and is ready for a battery later. See our solar and battery installation page for more.

FAQs
When should I have my switchboard inspected or upgraded?
1
Your switchboard should be inspected if it is old, damaged, frequently tripping, missing safety switches or unable to accommodate additional electrical loads. Older switchboards may not provide the level of protection expected from modern electrical installations. Bonus Electrical can inspect your Gold Coast switchboard and recommend appropriate upgrades where required.
What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?
2
A circuit breaker primarily protects electrical wiring and equipment from excessive current, while a safety switch is designed to help protect people from electric shock by detecting leakage of electrical current. Bonus Electrical can inspect existing switchboard protection and install or upgrade safety switches where required.
How do I know if my switchboard is unsafe?
3
Signs that your switchboard may require attention include frequent tripping, burning smells, buzzing or crackling noises, damaged components, overheating, corrosion, exposed wiring or a lack of safety switches. If you notice any of these warning signs, contact a qualified Gold Coast electrician for an inspection rather than attempting to work on the switchboard yourself.
Can you upgrade my switchboard to improve electrical safety?
4
Yes. Bonus Electrical provides switchboard upgrades and electrical safety services across the Gold Coast. Depending on the condition of the existing installation, an upgrade may include replacing outdated protective devices, installing safety switches, improving circuit protection and addressing identified electrical faults. All work is assessed and completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable Australian electrical requirements.
