What a safety switch does
A safety switch, or RCD (residual current device), constantly monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit. If some of it starts leaking to earth, for example through a faulty appliance, damaged cable or a person, the safety switch cuts the power in a fraction of a second. That's fast enough to prevent serious electric shock. It's different from a circuit breaker, which protects the wiring from overload but won't reliably protect people.
Does your home have enough safety switches?
Many older Gold Coast homes have only one safety switch covering the power points, or none at all. Current wiring rules require RCD protection on power and lighting circuits in new electrical work, and we recommend every home has all its circuits protected, spread across at least two safety switches so one fault doesn't black out the whole house. Open your switchboard: safety switches usually have a "Test" button and are labelled RCD or safety switch. If you can't find one, or you're not sure what's protected, we can check it for you.

Safety switch keeps tripping?
A safety switch that trips is doing its job: it has detected leakage somewhere. Common causes on the Gold Coast include water in outdoor power points or lights after rain, a faulty appliance such as a kettle, fridge, hot water system or pool pump, damaged cables, and ageing insulation. Try unplugging everything on that circuit and resetting it. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it still trips, or trips with nothing plugged in, call us. Don't keep resetting it or tape it on. We'll test the circuits, find the fault and fix it.
Testing safety switches
Press the "Test" button on each safety switch every three months. It should trip straight away. If it doesn't, it needs replacing. For rental properties and businesses, we can carry out full safety switch testing and provide records for your property manager or workplace safety requirements.
Landlords and property managers
Keeping tenants safe starts with working safety switches and smoke alarms. We look after both for landlords and property managers across the Gold Coast, often in the same visit. See our smoke alarm compliance and property management electrical services.

Safety switches Gold Coast: installing a safety switch
Installing a safety switch (RCD) is one of the most effective ways to protect your family from electric shock. In Queensland, homes must have a safety switch on the power circuits when they are sold or leased, and we recommend protection on every power and lighting circuit. Our safety switch services include testing your existing RCDs, adding safety switches to older switchboards and, where the board is full or outdated, a switchboard upgrade.
