Queensland's 2027 smoke alarm deadline
Queensland has the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia. Rental homes and homes being sold have had to comply since 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027, every home in Queensland must comply, including owner-occupied houses and units. Under the rules, smoke alarms must be:
Photoelectric (complying with AS 3786-2014), not ionisation
Interconnected, so when one alarm sounds, they all sound
Installed in every bedroom
Installed in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, or between the bedroom area and the rest of the level if there's no hallway
Installed on every storey, even if there are no bedrooms on that level
Hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery. Existing hardwired alarms must be replaced with hardwired alarms
Replaced once they're 10 years old, or sooner if they fail when tested
With the deadline approaching, electricians' diaries will fill up late in 2026. Booking early means you're compliant without the rush.

Selling your home?
If you're selling, your home must have compliant smoke alarms and you need to declare this in the contract. We can inspect your current alarms and upgrade them before settlement so the sale isn't held up.
Hardwired or battery?
If your home already has hardwired (240V) smoke alarms, the law says they must be replaced with hardwired alarms. Where there's no existing wiring, 10-year battery alarms that interconnect wirelessly can be a neat, cost-effective option. We'll look at your home and recommend the best compliant setup, rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
Why use a licensed electrician?
Hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. Using us also means alarms go in the right places for the compliance rules, away from air-conditioning vents, ceiling fans and corners where smoke doesn't reach properly, and every alarm is tested and interconnected before we leave.
Areas we cover
We install smoke alarms across the Gold Coast, including Upper Coomera, Coomera, Pimpama, Oxenford, Helensvale and Hope Island, plus Logan and the Scenic Rim.
