Split System Air Conditioning: A Gold Coast Buyer’s Guide

A split system is the most popular way to cool a Gold Coast home, and for good reason. They're efficient, quiet, and can cool one room or several without the cost of ducted air.

But the wrong size, the wrong spot or a rushed install can leave you with a unit that struggles every summer. Here's what to get right, from a licensed electrician and refrigeration technician who supplies and installs split systems across the Gold Coast.

What is a split system?

A split system has two parts: an indoor unit on the wall, and an outdoor unit (the compressor) outside. They're connected by refrigerant pipes, a drain line and electrical cabling through a small hole in the wall.

Almost all modern split systems are reverse cycle inverter units. They cool in summer, heat in winter, and adjust their speed rather than switching on and off, which saves power.

Getting the size right

Size is measured in kilowatts (kW) of cooling. As a rough starting point:

  • Small bedroom or study: 2.5 kW

  • Main bedroom or medium room: 3.5 kW

  • Small living area: 5.0 kW

  • Large open-plan living: 7.0 – 8.0 kW

That's only a guide. On the Gold Coast, west-facing rooms, raked ceilings, big windows, poor insulation and open-plan layouts can all push you up a size. Too small and it runs flat out all summer. Too big and it cycles on and off without properly drying the air.

We size every system on site, not from a brochure.

Where to put the indoor and outdoor units

Indoor unit: high on a wall, with clear airflow across the room. Avoid placing it directly over a bed or a couch where the airflow hits you.

Outdoor unit: somewhere with good airflow, out of direct afternoon sun if possible, and not right under a bedroom window of yours or your neighbour's. Shorter pipe runs between the two units are generally better for efficiency and cost.

Gold Coast-specific tips

  • Humidity: use "dry" mode on muggy days. It removes moisture with less cooling and often feels more comfortable.

  • Salt air: in beachside suburbs, ask about outdoor units with anti-corrosion coatings on the coils. Salt air shortens the life of standard units.

  • Storms and power surges: a dedicated circuit and correct protection at the switchboard reduce nuisance tripping and protect the unit.

What a proper installation includes

  1. Choosing the right size and model for the room.

  2. Mounting both units securely and level.

  3. Running refrigerant pipes, drain and cabling neatly, with the drain falling correctly so it doesn't leak inside.

  4. Pressure-testing and vacuuming the refrigerant lines before the system is started.

  5. A dedicated electrical circuit from the switchboard with the right protection.

  6. Testing, a run-through of the remote, and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance.

In Australia, handling refrigerant requires an ARC refrigerant licence. Bonus Electrical holds ARC licence L169231 as well as Electrical Contractor's Licence 1512152, so one business handles the whole job – supply, refrigeration and electrical.

Looking after your split system

  • Clean the indoor filters every few weeks in summer.

  • Keep plants and rubbish clear of the outdoor unit.

  • Book a professional service every year or two, especially in coastal suburbs.
