Why you need a licensed electrician for ceiling fan installation
In Queensland, hard-wiring a ceiling fan is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician. It's not just a legal box to tick. A ceiling fan is a heavy spinning appliance hanging over your head, and a poor installation can lead to:
fans coming loose because they're fixed only to plasterboard instead of a ceiling joist or noggin
overheating connections and fire risk from incorrect wiring
nuisance tripping of your safety switch
voided manufacturer warranties, since most require licensed installation
Every fan we install is fixed to a solid structural support, wired and tested to Australian standards, and checked for safe blade clearance before we leave. Electrical Contractor Licence 1512152.
Choosing the right ceiling fan
Not sure which fan to buy? Here's a quick guide, and we're happy to recommend a model before you buy.
Size it to the room. As a rough guide, a fan around 36–42 inches suits a small bedroom or study, about 48 inches suits a standard bedroom, and 52 inches or larger suits living rooms and open-plan areas. Very large spaces may need two fans.
DC vs AC motors. DC motor fans cost a little more upfront but are quieter, use less power and usually have more speed settings, which makes them the most popular choice for bedrooms.
Ceiling height. Fan blades need to sit high enough above the floor for safety. For standard ceilings we usually recommend a flush-mount fan, and for raked or high ceilings a longer downrod.
Indoor vs outdoor. Gold Coast humidity and salty coastal air are hard on standard fans. For patios, alfrescos and pool areas, choose a fan rated for outdoor or damp locations.
Light or no light. A fan with a built-in LED light saves a second fitting and keeps the ceiling tidy.

Ceiling fan installation FAQs
Can I install a ceiling fan myself in Queensland?
No. Hard-wiring a ceiling fan is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland. DIY installation is illegal and can void your home insurance and the fan's warranty.
Can you install a fan where there's only a light?
Usually, yes. In most cases we can replace an existing light fitting with a fan, or a fan with a light. We'll check the ceiling structure and wiring first, and add a separate switch or controller if you want the fan and light controlled independently.
Can you install a fan if there's no power in that spot?
Yes. We can run new cabling to the location and add a wall switch or controller. Access in the roof space affects how involved the job is, so we'll let you know when we quote.
Do you supply the fan, or can I buy my own?
Either works. You can buy your own fan and we'll install it, or we can recommend and supply a suitable model for your room.
Are DC fans worth it?
For most bedrooms and living areas, yes. DC fans are quieter, more energy-efficient and usually have more speed settings than older AC fans.
