An exhaust fan is only as good as where the ducting actually terminates — venting into the roof cavity instead of outside is a common shortcut that just pushes moisture into the roof space instead of removing it, so we always duct through to a roof vent or wall outlet and check the run isn't so long or bent it kills the fan's extraction rate. We size the fan to the room by litres-per-second against the room's volume, since a bathroom, kitchen and laundry all have different ventilation demands, and an undersized fan will run constantly without actually clearing the moisture.

Fans in bathrooms and other wet areas go on their own isolation switch or get wired into the lighting circuit with the correct switching arrangement depending on what’s already there, and combination fan/light units get checked for compatible transformers and dimmers rather than assuming the old wiring will suit a new unit. We test the finished installation for correct extraction and safe switching before signing off.
