First fix is where the whole job gets planned out, because once the plasterboard goes up any mistake becomes expensive to fix — so we walk the frame with the builder or plans before running a metre of cable, marking switchboard, power and light positions against the actual layout rather than a generic template. Every cable run gets nail plates fitted wherever it passes within the danger zone of a stud or noggin, and we keep power, lighting, data and any other services on separate, clearly labelled runs so second fix and future trades aren't guessing what's behind the wall.

We coordinate timing with the builder so first fix happens after framing is signed off but before insulation and plaster go in, since that’s the only window to make changes without cutting anything open. Every circuit is labelled at the frame stage and cross-checked against the switchboard schedule, so what gets connected at second fix matches exactly what was run — no surprises once the ceiling’s closed up.
